Diamond painting is easy enough if you think about it. You simply get a canvass with symbols then you match and stick the appropriate color of diamond on it until you’re done! Piece of cake right? Well, it is that easy, but what if I told you there are several ways to make it easier and more fun? Here are some 5D diamond painting best practices to get you up to speed on this diamond paint by numbers craze:

TIP #1: Use pill-boxes or old film canisters to store your diamond painting drills

Usually, the little diamonds you stick on the canvas to make it more visually appealing and glittery come in little packets or plastic baggies. Most of the time, if you rip these baggies open, it’s hard to reseal them. If you knock ‘em down or if they fall over to floor, your diamonds will explode everywhere and make a huge mess. It’s a nightmare!

If you want to keep this from happening, it’s best to start the project with some drill storage space on-hand. If you don’t have extra cash to spare on those customized diamond painting tool boxes, then you can DIY one from old pill-boxes or old film canisters! Just make sure to get the clear ones so you can easily see which color you are working with.

Quick Fix: Or use an old egg carton!

Don’t have any extra pill-boxes or old film canisters lying around? Simply pop into the nearest supermarket and grab yourself a carton of eggs! Not only will you have yummy scrambled eggs for breakfast but you’ll also get a hassle-free method to store your drills!

TIP #2: Having neck cramps? A painting easel is your new best friend!

Tired of craning your neck like a goose while working on your diamond painting? Are you having neck cramps from long hours of hunching over your project? Then you might want to move from the table to a slightly upright even surface. This is where an easel will come in very handy!

Perfect for small projects, this 5D diamond painting best practice ensures that you can work on your paintings vertically in eye level. Simply prop up the easel and use clips or magnets to make sure that your canvas doesn’t move around or fall over.

Quick fix: Try a bookstand for a more budget-friendly approach!

Don’t have a budget for an easel? That’s okay! You can try a book stand instead! You know those things priests use to prop up their bibles during a sermon? You can get those for a much more affordable price than an easel! Not to mention you can place them easily on top of any table or workspace to prop up your canvas once your neck starts to hurt.

TIP #3: Heavy books can straighten out your rolled canvas

Sometimes when you purchase a diamond painting kit, the canvas usually comes rolled up and it can take a bit of time and effort before you can get it straighten out. Hence, if you don’t want to keep swatting curly corner folding in on themselves during your painting process then I suggest you try this 5D diamond painting best practice: Putting heavy books on top of your canvas!

Simply spread out your canvas on a flat, even surface and stack up heavy books on the corners, sides and in the middle of it. You can use any thick heavy books you have lying around — dictionaries, encyclopedias, hardbound novels or grandma’s thick recipe books. Leave it for a few hours (or overnight, if you have the patience!). You’ll have a perfectly flat and even canvas afterwards!

Quick fix: For some people, the peel and stick method works, too!

But what if you’re not a book-loving person? Try the peel and stick method, instead! A quick disclaimer, though, this method doesn’t seem to work 100% of the time. So don’t worry if you find your canvas still rolling themselves up after you tried this trick.

Simple peel open one side of the canvas and then stick the plastic film back again. This process seems to magically straighten them out. No promises though, as each canvas is unique and may not straighten out easily.

TIP #4: Seal the deal with any clear drying adhesive

Of course, every diamond painter in the world would want to put their artworks on display once they finished working on a DIY diamond painting piece. However, diamond drills are not 100% secure on the canvas specially if dust, humidity, lint, and wet substances get into them. These conditions can cause the glue on the canvas to “lose their stick” which can cause the diamonds to fall out.

To prevent this unwanted situation, you might want to seal your finished diamond paintings with clear, quick-drying adhesives (like glue, modge podge or resin-based sealants). These will surely give your paintings an additional a protective layer to keep them from falling apart. With its clear properties, you can rest assured that the adhesive will not dull the diamond’s shimmering sparkle!

TIP#5: Get rid of pesky air bubbles with a small blade

Another pesky problem that comes with a rolled canvas? Pesky air bubbles. These annoying patches of air stuck in between the printed canvas and the sticky layer of glue that holds the diamond in place can be a real problem.

They cause ridges and uneven surface on the canvas. Diamonds tend to look soggy and would often droop down when pasted on these areas. Not to mention that it also causes diamonds to fall out easily.

Lucky for you, there is a very simple solution to this dilemma. Pop them bubbles out! What you want to do is take a small sharp knife and poke holes in (or slice through) the air bubbles. Once all the air fizzles out, you can just take your drill pen and press down the bulging layer of protective film. Crisis averted!
