How to Seal a Diamond Painting
So, you completed a diamond painting by carefully and meticulously placing each of the colored dots where they go. You stand back and admire your work and think how great it would be if you could preserve your masterpiece forever.

What Not to Do
First of all, let’s get a few no-no’s out of the way. These are methods some people may use to try to seal their painting, but they don’t work for whatever reason.
- Do not try to cover the canvas back with the original plastic cover. It won’t fit snugly and will come off right away.
- Don’t use paper glue or some other light adhesive to apply to the top of the diamonds and then try to put a thin sheet of plastic or film on top.
- Don’t use stretch wrap (plastic wrap or something similar), as that will not held the diamonds in place tightly.
Pick a Sealer
There are lots of different sealers you can use that would work. Gloss glaze works nicely, and there are a few different levels of thickness you can go for here. You want a glaze or sealer that is clear, though- one that won’t cover your work and will allow the bright colors to show through.
You may want to use something like mod podge glitter sealer. This will cut down the shininess of your diamonds, though, making them lose some of their luster, so be aware of that.
You can use a sealer, gloss or finish, or you can use products that function as all three of those. You can use multiple products to apply multiple coats, if you like, but that will just make more work for you.
Whatever you plan to use, try it out first somewhere other than on your painting to see how it looks when it dries.

That’s fine if you plan to frame it and hang it on the wall, but if you need to store a bunch of paintings in a small space, then consider using some kind of very light sealant that lets you roll the painting when it is finished.
How to Seal a Diamond Painting with a Spray Sealer
Did you know that there are also spray sealers that you can use? These are pretty handy and very easy to apply, so they may work best for people who want the easy way out.
Even though the aerosol sprays are easy to use, they don’t hold the diamonds in place very well. They work as a finish and look great, but they don’t seal the diamonds as effectively as a brush-on sealer would. They also don’t fill on all the gaps between the diamonds, if that is something that you care about.

Important Tips
These may not be the only ways sealing diamond painting. You could use a craft heat service like what is offered at Hobby Lobby. This sticks the diamonds onto the canvas very well using heat applied to the adhesive. You don’t need to use a sealant then, and the diamonds won’t fall off.
