The most important diamond painting tools you should know about

diamond painting accesories

It’s easy to get started with diamond painting, but there are some advanced techniques that only experienced hobbyists are going to be attempting. In order to perform some of the more specialized techniques, you will need some advanced diamond painting tools.

Square Diamonds

Diamonds are an integral part of the painting process. Their pretty colors make the canvas come to life and give it a shiny, beautiful look. Most people will begin with simple, standard round diamonds. However, there are square diamonds available as well, and I think if you ask most people who do diamond art which one they prefer, you will come out with square diamonds as the overwhelming answer.

The square ones (called square drills) are a bit harder to work with, in my experience, but they give the canvas a more complete look when it is finished. They also fit together very nicely, so there isn’t any space between them. You don’t get that with the round ones, and I don’t know about you, but it bothers me when I see all that space wasted on the canvas. Think of all those spots I could have inserted diamonds if they were square instead of round!

Tweezers

A lot of the diamond painting kits will include tweezers. Most people use these simply to correct poor diamond placement. They are good for that, yes, but they also help in other ways. I’m not just talking about plucking nose hairs here.

Tweezers are really good for placing diamonds precisely and relieving pressure off your hands. I feel my fingers cramp up after using the standard diamond pen for a long time, and it takes hours to complete a painting. So, I think it’s a good idea to switch over to the tweezers every now and then to give your fingers a break.

I think if you are really skilled, you can pick up two diamonds at once with the tweezers. Start getting good at that maneuver and you will feel like a pro.

Multi-Drill Diamond Painting Pen

This is one of the coolest tools that advanced users get to play with. I absolutely love these and how quickly they let me complete a painting.

Multi-drill pens can hold three or five drills (diamonds) at once. They look different from your typical diamond painting pen, as they have a fan shape on the end instead of a dull point.

I have some tips on how to use this kind of pen that I think will help you:

  • Make sure you add enough wax for all the drills you are going to pick up
  • Use your finger to flatten down the wax and make it an even line before picking up any drills.
  • When you place the drills onto the canvas, wiggle the pen slightly to ensure that the drills stick to the canvas

I find that this pen can sometimes place drills just slightly off-center. I may pick up a row of four drills and place them on the canvas, and all but one of them may fit nicely into the slots on the canvas.

So, what I do then is to just pick up the tweezers and adjust the positioning of that wayward drill. Easy-peasy!

Roller

You don’t need a roller to complete a diamond painting, but it sure helps. A lot of the less common diamond painting accessories, you will find, are good for making the painting process shorter and easier, even if they aren’t exactly essential.

The roller is used to press down the canvas and the drills on any area of the painting you have finished. It helps keep all the drills in place and prevents shifting and lose drills.

Rollers

I use the roller every half hour or so just as a kind of OCD thing. I am afraid someone will bump the table I am working on and my diamonds will go flying off the canvas. Or I will drop the canvas on the floor and lose lots of my hard work.

So, I roll the painting every so often to just press everything down in place. It makes me feel a lot better about my progress and any potential for accidents.

You’ll learn the right amount of pressure to use with the roller over time. It doesn’t take a lot to make sure everything is stuck well to the canvas. You want to be careful you’re not pressing so hard that the canvas is pushed around or your diamonds are forced to pop out of place.

Once you’ve finished your canvas, you may want to hang it. You can look at frames for a diamond painting to see if there is one that your painting will look good in. Whenever I finish a painting I am very proud of, I like to find a place to hang it, and the canvas always looks much better when it is placed into a frame. The diamond painting hangs better in a frame as well.

That’s about all I have to say about these important diamond painting accessories. Over time, there will probably be some new advanced tools released, but these are the important ones for now. If you get good with these, then you really are an expert.
