Diamond painting is pretty easy and lots of fun, but you might have some trouble figuring out how to use the pen at first. Using a pen should be pretty simple, right? However, some people need a little help to get started, and if that is the case for you as well, then you have come to the right place.

Diamond Painting Pens Explained

The pens are like styluses similar to what you would use with an iPad or touchscreen phone. They are a stick that is about the same length as a pen or a paintbrush, with a soft grip for holding and a small opening near the end for wax to be stored in.

You might think that you could use anything to paint with, but the pens that come in the kit are really useful and unique since they can hold wax. That wax helps you pick up the diamonds and transfer them to where they are supposed to go.

Make your own diamond painting pen

You can make your own diamond painting pen if you like. It’s not at all difficult to do. Just replace the tip in a ballpoint pen or some other pen with the tip for a diamond painting pen. They are pretty simple to switch out, and that gives you a lot more options for personalized pens that fit your hand just right or that look the way you want them too.

If you don’t have a diamond pen handy, you can use tweezers in a pinch to pinch the diamonds. You won’t even need to use the wax this way, but be warned that they are trickier to use and make take some getting used to.

Picking Up Diamonds

The diamond painting pen is how you interact with the diamonds, also called drills, or diamond dots, and way too many other names. You don’t pick up the diamonds with your fingers, since they would be really difficult to place accurately like that, plus you could get oil on them that might make them come un-stuck from the diamond painting over time.

So, you’ll use the pen instead, and now we want to tell you how to use the diamond painting pen.

You need to start by dipping it in the wax. Different pens hold different amounts of wax, but the principle and how you use it is all the same. Dab some wax on there and then you can poke at the diamonds. The standard pen picks up one diamond at a time, and that’s what you’ll want to start with.

You can get other pens that hold more diamonds at once, but those are tougher to use. You can find pens that hold three and even five diamonds at one time to lay rows of diamonds quickly. Imagine how fast your painting will fill up with sparkly diamonds when you use one of those!

Once you have a diamond drill stuck on the end of your diamond painting pen, you just place it gently and carefully on the canvas. Each spot on the canvas is marked with a letter or symbol to tell you which diamonds go there. You can follow the guide or just place your diamonds where you want.

If you have rested the diamond in the right spot, it will stick securely and not come loose very easily. You will be able to lift your pen back up and continue picking up more diamonds.

You repeat this process for reach of the diamonds, and it can take hours to finish a single painting like this, but that’s part of the joy of the process. The relaxing, simple work is soothing and fun, and you will enjoy seeing your painting come to beautiful life, sparkling with the diamonds you have added using your pen.
